Remember, the rule only applies if you’re using a margin account. If you’re using a cash account, you don’t need to worry about the rule. With cash accounts, there’s no leverage, no short selling, and, most notably, no PDT rule.

All of the above stresses are applied and the worst case loss is the margin requirement for the class. Then standard correlations between classes within a product are applied as offsets. As an example, within the Broad Based Index product 90% offset is allowed between SPX and OEX. Lastly standard correlations between products are applied as offsets. The rules were put in place years ago to mainly protect the broker. There is some consideration regarding the trader, however it’s all primarily to protect the broker’s assets. Because of all discussion over the years, a trader can still be a PDT even if they don’t risk any money at all.
Suppose you buy several stocks in your margin account. Minutes or hours later, you change your mind about a few of your purchases, so you sell them. Your “round trip” trades all took place on the same trading day. The money must be in the brokerage account because that is where the trading and risk is occurring.
This means if you don’t have at least $25,000 in your brokerage account, then you can’t make more than three intraday trades for every five-day period. We’re going to go over some simple steps that you can take to get around the day trading rules and basically be able to trade as much as you want. A lot of people are not so lucky and they don’t have $25,000 in their account so they do have to deal with the day trading rules under 25k. If the account is eligible for a PDT reset, a window will populate advising that the account is eligible.
